What copyright rules must I follow when uploading course materials?
When uploading materials to the system, it’s essential to respect copyright law.
In general, any material you did not create yourself is protected by copyright. This means:
- Own Materials:
- You can safely upload your own lecture slides and scripts, as long as they don’t contain copyrighted material from third parties.
- Third-Party Materials:
- Uploading entire textbooks, articles, or other copyrighted works is generally not permitted.
- Instead, use short quotes or excerpts under the rules of citation.
- Provide links to original sources if they are available online.
- Use Open Educational Resources (OER) with the appropriate Creative Commons licenses, as these are released for public use.
- For images and graphics from the internet, check the usage rights and always credit the source and creator.
- Important:
- You are personally responsible for complying with copyright law.
- If in doubt, obtain the author’s permission or avoid uploading the material.
- Also consider data protection aspects, especially regarding personal data.
- Note that the use of materials for teaching and instruction also has legal limits.
We recommend only using materials for which you clearly hold the rights, or relying on OER.
